DBK Prague by Věra Machoninová

DBK Prague, opened in 1981 by architect Věra Machoninová, once showcased a visionary interior and bold Atmofix steel façade. Though renovations erased much of its original design, its striking exterior and iconic escalators still echo late-modernist ambition.

DBK opened in 1981 as a furniture and home accessories store. Its striking façade, made from Atmofix steel, a Czechoslovak innovation that eliminates the need for paint mirrors Machoninová’s earlier Kotva Department Store.

Originally featuring an innovative interior, almost nothing remains today except the iconic escalators. The building has undergone multiple renovations, losing much of its original character, yet its bold exterior and futuristic ventilation shafts still stand.

Some old photos I managed to find where the original interior is visible. Unfortunately, I couldn’t determine who’s the author.
